The cover conference has been held.  I have no final absolute news, except that the direction they're thinking should make some people (among them ME) very happy.   When it's permitted to say more, I'll say more.

As long as you are happy, we are happy!

Good. Because at this point I'm very happy. Stuff does happen that neither the editor nor I can control...as someone on a writer listserv pointed out, if the senior buyer at a chain hates it, it doesn't matter how perfect it would be for thee and me. Etc. So let's just keep a positive attitude and hope that it all works out.

You do realize that you started a meme with that quiz? I saw it popping up on other author's LJs very soon after - all with attributions.

I saw that. Well, I posted about doing it on a writer listserv where there had been discussion of how covers misrepresented our characters (esp. skin color). So then we had a long discussion (with comments from former-editors-now-writers about the inside skinny on cover negotiations) about cover art and whether writers had any business having opinions on it and whether anyone would listen.

You being happy is good. How many authors get to say that about covers, right? :)

That said...

Arvid? Yes? *grin*

I've been extremely lucky with my covers overall, so I've usually been happy...and I do know others who've had a run of good covers. The thing is, the more good covers you get, the more you fear that the small gods of publishing are preparing a Pit of Horror for your next one, just to teach you humility, and each one that *isn't* bad just digs a deeper possible pit. Everyone gets what my mother used to call an OMG #1 cover sometime--and some unlucky souls get them more often. As I said, I've been lucky.

Hmm, Pit of Horror for the Paks books (in my mind) would be a Gor-esque rendition of Paks herself, maybe with improbably chainmail bikini clinging to the leg of an overly Elf-ified yet mighty-thewed Phelan?

The cover the omnibus version of the Deed of Paksenarrion actually got my mom to buy it for me when I was 11. She was so happy to see a fantasy novel (she hated that I liked to read them, but couldn't stop me) with a woman on it wearing clothing and doing something active instead of staring at a man that she decided I could handle the 1025 pages. (It's the light blue cover with Paks fighting the wolf things.)

Of course, given some of the subject matter, my over-protective mother might have thought twice, but she never read anything I read first :)

The second original Paks cover (for DIVIDED ALLEGIANCE, Paks in a Frederick's of Hollywood pale blue satiny nightshirt, thigh-short, after she'd been captured in Kolobia, was, let's say, my less than favorite cover. It wasn't Goresque, in pose or any other way, but it was definitely Not Paks.
