Bread Yet Again [Aug. 11th, 2009|07:46 pm]

Today I made the challah--having finally pulled my act together--to thank our neighbors who gave us the eggs.  A loaf for them.  A loaf for us.  Guess how much of our loaf is left....

Well, it's not quite all gone, but it probably will be, by bedtime.

I need to go back to making "daily bread" (whole wheat) because it's not quite as enticing.   Then again, it's ArmadilloCon this weekend, and I should take some really good homemade bread down with me to share.

Then again I need to not wear myself out this week, because next week's going to be a load.

If I get it made, it'll be for gifts, not bartering.

Horray for Challah!! The freshest I've ever had was from a grocery store, made either that day or the night before. I can imagine that fresh out of the oven is really something.

Um...yes. Still warm enough to soften/melt the butter that it doesn't need but you put on it anyway.

It's not hard to make if you remember to put all the ingredients in and know how to braid.

I've always wanted to try making challah - I just don't have a good recipe.

There's nothing better than fresh bread out of the oven. I wish I had more time to do such things.

My recipe came from Toni Weisskopf at Baen, from her family I think. It's worked well for me for years. But you need to be making bread enough that you have the "feel" in your hands. If you want the recipe, send me your email address (link off my website) and when I get back from South Carolina I'll send it to you.

I tried to recipes for ciabatta this past weekend and got 9 loaves out of the work. The holes in the texture of the loaf are still not big enough, I still get a very soft, fine-holed bread.

Anyway, I took the loaves into work for folks to eat. There is no way that my household would be able to eat all of the bread while it's still fresh.

The next day I was wandering by a friend's office when they asked me if I knew who had made the bread. I admitted to it and heard a groan from across the hall.

Apparently, the two ladies had made a bet as to whether the bread was homemade or commercial. The loser had to drink a shot of apple cider vinegar.

No...not that yet.

I have eaten it (today) with Dutch chocolate Blue Bell on top, which make it clear why my jeans are so tight.

We can get Nutella...I've had it, and it's good, but on a hot afternoon, it's no match for Dutch Chocolate Blue Bell, a big lump. Or Homemade Vanilla with chocolate sauce...either one.

When I want chocolate per se on bread, I melt the good stuff and pour it on.
