  • 11:55:12: Zero sleep last night. Not a good start for the day. But propane truck came, yay! Bread dough rising, yay! Jaw pain, boo!
  • 14:01:04: Bread's almost done. Smells wonderful. Take it out, then take nap before driving to city to meet family.

The hardest part of baking bread, I find, is not cutting into a fresh out of the oven loaf and devouring it with melted butter.

Around here it's known as "cook's portion"--the heel off a hot loaf. Yes, it's hard to do without collapsing the end of the loaf, but I have a technique now, and nearly always choose to take my cut and run with it.

in my youth it was lots and lots of butter *and* brown sugar. Alas, the bathroom scale would protest mightily nowadays.
