Beverly Sills [Aug. 13th, 2007|11:51 am]
[Current Location |Home]
[Current Music |Bach, Cantata 140]

I was watching a re-run of the PBS special on Beverly Sills last night, once again impressed with what a sane, sensible, humane person Sills seems to have been.   Any successful performer must also be a hard worker, but Sills had, on top of that, the personality to get through repeated challenges without bitterness and with little wasted effort.  The interview sections, recorded at different times in her life, were interspersed with recordings of her performances...fascinating and humbling.

I heard her sing live once, unamplified, a chance matinee performance at the Boston Opera when I was in high school and she wasn't quite so famous yet, perhaps in 1975. Unbelievable. I remember the shivers up and down my spine.

So I wept when a chance viewing of evening news told me of her death. My 8 year old asked me why I was crying and looked concerned. I told her a lady with a very beautiful voice had died and I had heard her sing once, when I was young. And it made mommy a little bit sad to remember. But I was ok.

What a wonderful memory to have...makes the sad sadder, maybe, but you have the joy of having heard her live.
