  • 21:39:59: Vertebrae soup ended up scrumptious. Two bowls for husband, three for son (or maybe four) and one for me. Love the 8 qt pot!
  • 21:55:03: Four months after buying some new cookware, still v. happy w/ the new pots & pans. Wish I'd done this years ago. All-Clad & LeCreuset WIN.
  • 21:57:31: Though need more storage space. Small kitchen & big pots. Several-many big pots.

A Hal Foster Prince Valiant Recipe

Reminds me of a recipe for "dragon tail" soup.

You cook cow vertebrae in the crock pot, along with assorted veggies for beef stew, like carrots, celery and potato. You also put in artichoke leaves for the "scales."

Each serving gets its own vertebrae, and a portion of the scales. Due to the artichoke,it is one strange color, but very tasty.

Wow...I'd need much bigger bowls, then. These vertebrae would not fit in any of the serving bowls I have. One might have just fit on a plate. (I should have taken pictures.)

Good stuff, though. Husband and son ate up almost all of it. I'll regenerate today with some sliced sausage, more potatoes, maybe thrown in some black beans. (Black beans didn't make the cut yesterday because it was one more thing to do.)

Still trying to convince son that he can make soup himself. He likes mine, eats 2-3 bowls at a time, but he finds it daunting. I guess I can understand. I watched my mother make soup for years and didn't try it myself until I was out of college and another couple of years had passed.

Maybe an intermediate step? When I was in grad school, I started doctoring canned soup, adding a little extra spice first, then whatever leftovers I had, then extra veggies, beans, meat or potatos. It requires a little less commitment and thought.

We've scaled back cooking expectations. Ours hasn't the time, patience, or attention span to make complicated recipes. She enjoyed a friend's soup, one with a mix of fresh and frozen ingredients--much simpler than what we'd make, got the recipe and has made it a couple of times for the family. Neither gourmet nor home cooking but tasty enough and nutritious. We're now looking for an easy-from-scratch cookbook. Cookies and cake have been mastered, for obvious reasons.

Given how fabulous your soups sound, I can understand his concern. Maybe give him some ingredients to start with that he can handle in his apartment? Or ask him what a soup you are working on needs to be better?

I'm still not real confident about my soups but they get eaten quite heartily (though DH often adds a few drops of pepper sauce since I'm a wimp).
