Something that may interest you in space: a universal docking system (iLids) is being hammered out that allows for a single docking interface from any vehicle to any vehicle. This allows rescue operations with dead craft as well. The secret? Have you ever seen the flight simulators on giant legs that than turn and tilt every which way? Imagine that shrunk to fit on the nose of a capsule...

You would think (if you'd been raised by my engineer mother) that this would've been a design consideration from the get-go. But the benefits of standardization are constantly having to be rediscovered.

Yes, but we are under the thumb of the same people (politicians) who won't develop a new vehicle for 1/3 of a century.

It's not just politicians...competing design teams have produced incompatibility over and over, not just in this but in many things.

At least now they're thinking about it.
