"the erotic chapter"?

Is this something mandated in a certain genre of book? I hadn't noticed it before but lately, I've been finding some decent paranormal adventure/romance books spoilt (imho) by the intrusion of a gratuitous graphic (and usually badly written) sex scene. I find the scene distasteful and it usually spoils some of my pleasure in the story even though I tend to skip over the pages. I don't mind so much well-written erotica but ... these seem shoe-horned into the storyline for no real reason at all.
