  • 09:16:09: I really, really hate politicians who "call" to play their recordings in my ear. If you can't bother to talk to people "live", don't call.
  • 09:19:33: Specifically, Mike Huckabee, whose recorded message yesterday interrupted my work and whose positions are opposite my own.
  • 09:22:34: But of course, Huckabee does not have a "contact" button on his website, and no easy way to say "Let me alone, you scumsucker."

We just look at the caller ID number. If it's a donation or political group or whoever, we just let it go to the digital dump file. If it's a number we recognize, or is just a telephone number with no business name or group, we answer.

It gets 95% of the garbage off my phone.

Caller ID is not available everywhere and some people do not want to, or cannot, pay for the enhanced services.

Even if you do have it, unless you are sitting beside the phone you have to stop what you are doing and go look at it. Then there are the telemarketers (or politicians or charities) who block ID. My best friend the doctor does that, since she doesn't want her patients to call her cell phone with urgent questions in the middle of the night, she wants them to call her emergency service, so I either have to answer all "Private" calls or risk missing a call from a very busy woman.

We have an answering machine with the feature that it attempts to "read out loud" the name on the Caller ID. I can hear it from almost anywhere downstairs. If I'm upstairs, chances are, I can't make it to the phone in time anyway. (We have cellphones and give those numbers out to most of the people we actually want calling us; the school district has those numbers, but if it's the nurse at the kids' school, we want to speak to her sooner rather than later.)

If it's not coming from the school district, chances are great that we just won't pick up the call.
